Description

CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 UTP Cable — 305m Reel

The CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 UTP Cable is a 4-pair unshielded twisted-pair cable rated to 250 MHz for Gigabit Ethernet indoor structured cabling. It is designed for residential, small office, and light commercial networking installations where Gigabit Ethernet connectivity is required at a cost-effective price point. Supplied on a 305-metre pull-box reel with sequential metre markings printed along the jacket, it suits straightforward in-wall, above-ceiling, and trunking installations within standard indoor environments.

The “semi-copper” designation refers to the use of copper-clad aluminium (CCA) conductors — an aluminium core with a thin copper surface layer — rather than solid bare copper. This construction is important to understand before specifying the cable, as it affects electrical performance, PoE power delivery capability, TIA standard compliance, and termination tool compatibility compared to full bare copper Cat 6 cable. The CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 is appropriately used in budget-constrained installations with standard Gigabit Ethernet and basic PoE requirements over short to medium run lengths.

Performance and Bandwidth

The CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 cable is rated to 250 MHz, supporting Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T / IEEE 802.3ab) across the 100-metre horizontal channel under standard conditions. It is additionally compatible with Fast Ethernet (100BASE-TX) and 10BASE-T applications. An internal cross-spline separator maintains physical separation between the four twisted pairs, reducing pair-to-pair crosstalk (NEXT) and contributing to signal integrity at Cat 6 frequencies.

It is important to note that this cable does not fully comply with ANSI/TIA-568.2-D, ISO/IEC 11801, or EN 50173 Cat 6 standards in the same way as solid bare copper cable — those standards specify bare copper conductors. The CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 meets basic Cat 6 channel performance requirements for data transmission in standard conditions, but should not be specified for installations where TIA or ISO/IEC channel certification is a project deliverable or contractual requirement. For certified Cat 6 installations, a bare copper variant should be specified.

Conductor Construction — CCA Explained

The semi-copper (CCA) conductor consists of an aluminium core with a copper surface coating. This construction provides a cost reduction compared to full bare copper cable while maintaining adequate conductivity for standard Gigabit Ethernet data transmission at typical indoor run lengths.

There are, however, practical differences between CCA and bare copper conductors that buyers should understand:

Electrical resistance — Aluminium has approximately 61% of the electrical conductivity of copper at the same cross-section. CCA conductors therefore have higher DC resistance per metre than equivalent bare copper conductors. Over longer runs, this increased resistance raises signal attenuation and, more significantly, increases voltage drop on the power conductors in PoE applications.

PoE performance — The higher DC resistance of CCA conductors limits PoE power delivery performance. Standard PoE (IEEE 802.3af, up to 15.4W) is generally supported over short runs with CCA cable, but PoE+ (30W) and PoE++ (60–90W) applications will experience elevated voltage drop and power loss, particularly on runs exceeding 30–40 metres. For PoE+ and PoE++ devices — including Wi-Fi 6 access points, IP cameras with IR illuminators, and VoIP phones with high power requirements — bare copper Cat 6 is the appropriate specification.

Termination — CCA conductors are more brittle than bare copper at the same gauge. They are more susceptible to conductor break during IDC punch-down and RJ45 crimping, particularly with aggressive tooling. Standard 110-style keystone jack punch-down and RJ45 crimping are compatible with CCA cable, but care must be taken during termination to avoid conductor fracture at the connection point.

Bend and mechanical durability — CCA conductors have lower tensile strength than bare copper. They are more susceptible to conductor fracture at sharp bend points and under repeated flexing — a relevant consideration during installation in tight conduit runs or wall cavities with acute bends.

Cable Construction

The CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 cable is built as follows:

  • Conductors — 23 AWG CCA (copper-clad aluminium), colour-coded, forming eight conductors across four twisted pairs
  • Insulation — Polyethylene insulation on individual conductors
  • Pair separator — Internal cross-spline maintains pair separation and reduces crosstalk
  • Outer jacket — Flexible indoor PVC, typically grey or blue, rated for general indoor communications (CM)
  • Length markings — Sequential metre markings from 0 to 305m printed on the jacket for accurate measurement during installation

The 305-metre reel is supplied in a pull-box with dispenser opening, allowing tangle-free cable payout during installation through walls, conduit, and trunking without a reel stand.

Appropriate Installation Contexts

The CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 cable is appropriately specified in the following contexts:

Residential and home networking — Standard Gigabit Ethernet runs for home network infrastructure, smart home devices, and streaming media over run lengths typically under 50 metres, with basic PoE requirements (standard PoE at ≤15.4W for devices such as IP phones and standard IP cameras).

Small office and light commercial — Gigabit LAN infrastructure in small offices, retail units, and light commercial premises where run lengths are modest, TIA channel certification is not required, and PoE devices are limited to standard PoE power levels.

Budget-constrained fit-outs — Where the project budget does not accommodate full bare copper Cat 6 cable and the installation requirements are within the performance envelope of CCA construction — specifically, Gigabit data over short to medium runs without high-power PoE devices.

The CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 cable is not appropriate for:

  • Installations requiring TIA-568.2-D or ISO/IEC 11801 certified Cat 6 channels
  • PoE+ (30W) or PoE++ (60–90W) devices, particularly on runs exceeding 30 metres
  • Long horizontal runs approaching the 90–100 metre limit where CCA conductor resistance may push attenuation outside Cat 6 limits
  • Installations subject to repeated physical stress, sharp bends, or mechanical load on the cable

Supported Applications

Within its appropriate installation envelope, the CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 cable supports:

  • 1000BASE-T — Gigabit Ethernet (IEEE 802.3ab) over standard indoor runs
  • 100BASE-TX — Fast Ethernet
  • 10BASE-T — Standard Ethernet
  • Basic PoE (IEEE 802.3af) — Up to 15.4W per port on shorter runs
  • Standard IP cameras — Low-power PoE-powered analogue-over-IP and basic HD cameras on short runs
  • VoIP phones — Standard PoE IP telephony
  • Home and small office networking — Wired LAN connections to PCs, smart TVs, NAS devices, and home automation systems

Ideal Users

  • Residential Installers and Home Network Builders — For homeowners running Ethernet to rooms for streaming, gaming, and home office use, the CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 delivers Gigabit connectivity at a lower per-metre cost than bare copper alternatives. Run lengths in residential properties are typically well within the range where CCA performance is adequate for standard data applications.
  • Small Business and Retail Operators on Tight Installation Budgets — Small offices, retail units, and SME premises with modest run lengths and standard PoE device requirements can deploy the CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 to achieve Gigabit LAN infrastructure at a reduced cabling cost. The cable suits installations where the priority is functional Gigabit connectivity rather than TIA-certified channel performance.
  • Electrical and Data Contractors on Budget-Specified Projects — Where a client specification calls for Cat 6 cabling without mandating bare copper conductors or TIA channel certification, the CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 provides a functional Gigabit solution. Contractors should confirm with the client whether PoE device types and power levels are within the CCA cable’s appropriate performance envelope before specifying.
  • IT Technicians Running Short Supplementary Runs — For short supplementary data runs to add connectivity points in existing buildings — connecting a desk, a meeting room display, or a single additional workstation — the semi-copper cable provides adequate Gigabit performance at minimal material cost where run lengths are short and PoE power requirements are basic.
  • Facilities Teams in Small Organisations — For in-house cable runs in smaller organisations where structured cabling certification is not required and the network consists of standard Gigabit switches with basic PoE devices, the CP Indoor Semi Copper Cat 6 provides a straightforward and cost-efficient Gigabit cabling solution.
