Panatron PXT206 Master Telephone — DTMF/FSK Caller ID
The Panatron PXT206 is a corded analogue desktop telephone designed for office, reception, and home use. It combines dual-mode DTMF and FSK Caller ID with a 14-digit LCD display, built-in speakerphone, call logging, speed dialling, and on-hold music in a single device that operates directly from the telephone line without requiring external power. The PXT206 is positioned as a feature-complete analogue handset for PSTN and PBX extension use — providing call identification, call management, and hands-free capability in environments where a corded desk phone is the primary communication instrument.
Dual-Mode Caller ID — DTMF and FSK
The PXT206 supports both Caller ID delivery standards used by telephone service providers:
FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) — The Type 1 Caller ID standard used in the majority of analogue PSTN deployments globally. FSK transmits caller information between the first and second ring using a modem-like signal on the telephone line. Most fixed-line Caller ID subscriptions in Kenya and East Africa use FSK.
DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) — The Type 2 Caller ID standard used by some service providers and PBX systems, transmitting caller information during the ringing phase using DTMF tones. Some Panatron PBX systems and certain operator configurations use DTMF-based Caller ID delivery.
Supporting both standards simultaneously means the PXT206 identifies incoming calls correctly regardless of which Caller ID format the connected line or PBX uses — without requiring the user to configure the Caller ID mode. This dual compatibility is relevant in environments where the same phone model may be deployed across direct PSTN lines and PBX extensions simultaneously, or where the Caller ID standard of the connected service is uncertain.
Note that Caller ID display requires the telephone service provider or PBX system to deliver Caller ID data on the line. If Caller ID is not subscribed to or not configured on the connected PBX, the PXT206 will display “UNKNOWN” or no caller information.
Display
The PXT206 features a 14-digit LCD display with five adjustable brightness levels. The display shows:
- Incoming caller number and name (when Caller ID data is present)
- Real-time date and time
- Call duration during active calls
- Call log entries during review
- Speed dial and feature status indicators
The five brightness levels allow the display to be adjusted for ambient light conditions — relevant for reception desks near windows with variable daylight, or for dimly lit office environments where a higher brightness setting improves readability without causing glare.
Call Logging
The PXT206 stores call records for review after the call:
- 38 incoming call records — stores caller number, name (when available), date, and time of each incoming call
- 16 outgoing call records — stores dialled numbers and call times for recently made calls
These records allow users to return missed calls, review recent incoming call activity, and identify callers who did not leave a message. The call log is accessible directly from the handset without connecting to a computer or external system.
Speed Dialling
The PXT206 supports 11 pre-stored speed dial numbers. These are programmed directly on the handset and allow one-touch or abbreviated dialling of frequently called numbers — internal extensions, key clients, suppliers, or emergency contacts. Speed dial storage reduces the time required to initiate calls to regularly contacted numbers and eliminates the need to remember or look up frequently dialled numbers.
Ringer and Audio
16-volume adjustable ringer — The ringer volume is adjustable across 16 levels, from silent to loud, accommodating noisy open-plan offices and quieter private offices within the same device without requiring separate handset models.
16 selectable music ring tones — 16 different ring melodies are available for selection, allowing users to distinguish their handset’s ring from adjacent phones in shared office environments.
Built-in on-hold music — When a call is placed on hold, the PXT206 plays built-in music to the held caller. This provides a more professional call-holding experience compared to silence, and eliminates the need for an external music-on-hold source for individual handsets.
Hands-free speakerphone — The built-in speakerphone enables calls to be conducted without holding the handset, supporting multitasking during calls and accommodating conference calls involving a second person in the room.
Handset, headset, and speaker volume control — Volume is independently adjustable for the handset earpiece, headset output (where connected), and speakerphone, allowing users to set comfortable listening levels for each mode.
Call Management Features
The PXT206 supports the following call management functions:
- Call Forwarding — Redirects incoming calls to another extension or number, subject to line and PBX support
- Call Waiting — Alerts the user to an incoming call while already engaged in a conversation, with audible notification
- Call Holding — Places the current call on hold while the on-hold music feature plays to the held caller
- Hold / Flash — Standard hold and flash-hook functions for PBX feature access and call transfer initiation
- Mute — Disables the microphone during a call to prevent the remote party from hearing background sound
- Redial — Redials the last outgoing number with a single key press
- Transfer — Supports call transfer to another extension, subject to PBX configuration
- Conference — Three-party conference calling, subject to line and PBX support
- Do Not Disturb (DND) — Suppresses incoming ring to prevent interruption when the user is unavailable
- Forward / Pause keys — Function keys for call management operations
Local Area Code Filter
The PXT206 includes an 8-digit local area code filter. This feature suppresses the display of the local area code prefix on incoming calls that originate from the same area code as the handset — displaying only the subscriber number rather than the full number including area code. This simplifies caller number display in environments where the majority of incoming calls are local, and aligns the displayed number with the format used when returning calls locally.
Flash Off Time
The PXT206 offers selectable flash off time at 300ms, 600ms, and 1000ms. The flash off time determines the duration of the hook-flash signal used to access PBX features such as call transfer, conference, and hold. Different PBX systems require different flash timings to correctly interpret the hook-flash signal — the ability to select between 300ms, 600ms, and 1000ms ensures the PXT206 is compatible with the flash timing requirements of the connected PBX system.
Power and Connectivity
The PXT206 operates directly from the telephone line — it draws power from the line voltage supplied by the PSTN or PBX, without requiring a separate mains power adapter or batteries. This line-powered operation means the phone continues to function during a mains power failure, provided the telephone line remains active — a relevant consideration for essential communications positions such as reception desks and security posts.
The phone connects via a standard RJ11 telephone line interface and is compatible with standard analogue PSTN lines and analogue extension ports on PBX systems including Panatron, Panasonic, and other analogue hybrid systems.
Mounting
The PXT206 supports both desktop and wall-mounted installation. The wall-mount capability provides installation flexibility in environments where desk space is limited — kitchen areas, corridors, waiting rooms, and utility spaces where a wall-mounted handset is more practical than a desk unit.
Ideal Users
- Reception and Front Desk Staff — The combination of DTMF/FSK Caller ID, 38-record incoming call log, and call management features (hold with music, transfer, DND, conference) provides reception staff with the tools to screen, manage, and route calls professionally. The speakerphone supports brief in-room consultation during calls without disconnecting the remote caller.
- Small Office and SME Employees — For offices deploying Panatron or analogue PBX systems, the PXT206 provides a feature-complete desk extension handset at an accessible price point. The 11 speed dial numbers accommodate the most frequently called extensions and external numbers for individual users, reducing dialling time on repetitive calls.
- Home Office Users with PSTN or VoIP ATA Lines — The PXT206 connects to any standard analogue line — including analogue telephone adapters (ATAs) for VoIP services — and provides Caller ID, call logging, and hands-free capability for home office communication without requiring a complex IP phone setup.
- Security and Facility Posts — Line-powered operation ensures the phone remains functional during power outages — a critical requirement for security checkpoints, building entrances, and facility management positions where communication must be maintained regardless of mains power availability.
- PBX System Installers and Telecommunications Dealers — The PXT206’s dual DTMF/FSK Caller ID compatibility, selectable flash off time (300/600/1000ms), and compatibility with standard analogue extension ports make it a versatile handset for deployment across multiple PBX brands and line types without requiring per-installation Caller ID mode configuration.
